High Temperature Solid State Thermal Storage Boosts Grid Stability

Industrial scale solid state thermal storage systems are gaining traction for their ability to absorb excess electricity during off-peak nighttime hours. These units heat ceramic or metallic storage media to temperatures exceeding 800 degrees Celsius, retaining the energy for later use during peak demand periods. The stored heat can be released as hot water or circulated for space heating.

Beyond winter heating, these systems can also support summer cooling when paired with absorption chillers. This dual functionality improves the return on investment for commercial facilities while helping utilities balance load on the electrical grid. Typical storage density reaches 700 Kcal per liter, roughly 20 times that of water.
